ABOUT WILSON

Hi, I’m Wilson and I’m a recovering software engineer, an advocate for the sun, and accidently* your independent member for mining and pastoral region in wa.

I was born in Geraldton and I spent my childhood living in regional Western Australia. I completed a degree in Computer Science, majoring in Software Engineering, at Edith Cowan University, and I undertook an exchange programme at Carleton University in Canada.

After University, I worked as a software engineer for several private technology companies in Western Australia. Later, I moved to Seattle in the United States where, for four years, I held senior management roles at both Amazon and Expedia Group.

*Is being the accidental politician such a bad thing?

I have a background in software engineering. It doesn't give me any sort of special abilities, background in debating or political ideology. But we're talking about a contest of ideas in the chamber - and I think if you have more diversity from different people with backgrounds participating as part of that debate, it produces better outcomes.

In 2021, I uprooted my life in software engineering to take a seat in parliament after winning a spot with only 98 primary votes for the Daylight Savings Party. My ambition was not grounded in political ideology, rather, it was to feel represented on issues to improve our lifestyle in WA.

Now, as an Independent Member for the massive and remote Mining and Pastoral Region, I have had to work to understanding the people that I represent, which comes from listening (and a fair amount of travel).

I am committed to regional-first initiatives, including affordable and accessible housing and indigenous rights and recognition.

Outside of politics, I enjoy sport climbing and trail running in Western Australia’s remote and far-flung places.

I am currently a member of the WA Parliament's Public Administration Committee and I am a convener of the Parliamentary Friends of Technology and Innovation.
